Treating Habit Disorders in London

Efficacy’s Cognitive Behavioural therapists, based in centres across London & Sevenoaks, are experts and highly training in delivering CBT treatments to help you overcome your habit disorder.

Habit disorders can be classified as repeated acts. Individuals experiencing them generally have difficulty in identifying a clear motivation or rationale for doing them.

Habit disorders can include gambling, pathological stealing (kleptomania) hair pulling (trichotillomania) and skin picking.

Common Features

Common features of habit disorders are they are repetitive and at times can be conditioned and therefore seem to be automatic in nature. They can be disruptive to individuals work and social routines and in the long term may have lasting effects on appearance. An example can be prolonged hair pulling damaging follicles and stunting hair growth.
Understandably individuals may be embarrassed by their habits as they are sometimes noticed by others or viewed as being negative.

Treatment Options

CBT aims to help individuals identify patterns of their behaviour. For example they may find that their habit increases when under stress or when they are feeling low in mood. There is both positive and negative reinforcement with habits for example some may gain pleasure from their habit others may use it as a means of coping with feelings that are difficult to manage.

With your therapist you will gain an insight into learning about your behaviour and then discuss ways to intervene. Treatment will involve changing external cues and habit reversal. Eg instead of hair pulling clenching fists or changing your physical environment.

Evidence Base

Habit reversal is the only behavioural treatment validated by a randomised-controlled trial (Azrin et al, 1980).
