Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Problem Drinking

This full-day workshop will illustrate and explore the application of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) to the treatment of problem drinking. Areas covered will include assessment,
problem conceptualisation and case formulation, and key treatment interventions. Emphasis will be equally placed on the provision of key information and the practice of core CBT skills.

The aims of this workshop are for participants to:

  • Learn to assess briefly and efficiently a patient presenting with problem drinking and recognise whether they are suitable for CBT.
  • Conceptualise problem drinking using the CBT model.
  • Consider the importance of a detailed case formulation.
  • Understand the application of basic treatment interventions, with a particular emphasis on their sequencing.

Professor Spada is currently appointed Professor of Psychological Therapies at London South Bank University in partnership with North East London NHS Foundation Trust. A leading
academic and expert practitioner in CBT for problem drinking he has published over 30 articles in international peer reviewed journals
and authored three books: Overcoming Problem Drinking, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Problem Drinking: a Practitioner’s Guide, and An Introduction to Sensible Drinking.

This one day workshop is suitable for mental health professionals, including clinical and counselling psychologists, counsellors, mental health nurses, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, social workers, substance misuse workers, and occupational therapists.
