Professor Marcantonio Spada

10th June 2011

Venue: Royal Society of Medicine, London

Clinical research has shown that Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an effective treatment for a number of common mental health problems, including anxiety and mood disorders, eating disorders, psychotic disorders and substance misuse. CBT skills are frequently used within psychiatry and this workshop offers skills development, optimisation and application.

The aims of this workshop are for participants to:

  • Recognise and understand, the principles underpinning CBT, and the interplay between thoughts, emotions, physiological responses and behaviours that maintain anxiety and mood problems.
  • Understand and apply basic CBT techniques for anxiety and mood problems, with a particular emphasis on activity monitoring and scheduling, cognitive restructuring, and the interruption of brooding and worry.
  • Introduce disorder specific CBT formulations in line with NICE guidelines and discuss how these fit with ICD10 and DSM-IVr classifications.
  • Identify from the evidence base when a patient may or may not benefit from CBT.

Professor Spada is renowned as an engaging, inspirational and passionate speaker. He is currently appointed Professor of Psychological Therapies. A leading academic and expert practitioner in cognitive-behavioural theory he has published over 40 articles in international peer reviewed journals and authored three books.
